Iceland Day 4 (Dettifoss, Lake Myvatn, Godafoss, Akureyri)

Morning temperature got down to -10c.

Some are probably asking, how is Shannon's foot dealing with the cold.  Well, it did not much appreciate it.  (By the end of the trip it was rebelling)

Some pretty slick roads getting out to Dettifoss area.  Black ice, thick snow, slick snow...the snow spikes in the tires could only do so much.

Dettifoss Waterfall

Just under the observation deck, there was a thick layer of ice melting from the water spray.  This deck was several hundred yards away from the falls but the spray was very powerful.

It may look like watermarks in the preceding photos but that is ice.  Waterfall spray landed on my camera and then froze near instantaneously.  In fact shortly after photographing the waterfall, my focal options were limited.  -10 degrees is rough on a camera.

Who needs a refrigerator at these temperatures.  You can see Ryan's profile in the passenger seat - still with me...just sleeping. -Shannon
Oh, I do remember a bunch of the backs of my eyelids about this time. Thanks goodness it was pretty comfortable seats.  -Ryan

The skies through this area were beautiful mint greens, light blues and yellows.  Pictures don't do it justice.

I'd been noticing smoke coming out of the mountains in the distance for miles.  Come to find out there were mud pots and steam vents all over the area.

A front profile of Ryan.  He started to wake up a little around this point.  At least for more than 5 minutes at a time.

These crazy Asian gals were putting their hands in places I wouldn't dare.

Blue Geothermal Pond in Northern Iceland (not to be confused by the Blue Lagoon tourist trap by the airport)

The Grjotagja caves are areas that locals used to have ceremonial baths in the hot springs. Volcanic activity has made many of the walls unsafe and they are marked as do not enter.

Here is the top view of the Grjotagja caves showing the crevice created by Volcanic activity.

A view from the top (near crevice) showing the volcano in the background as well as Ryan sitting in the car.  If you look REAL close you may see him waving...or sleeping! lol

A peak inside

Lake Myvatn

Godafoss Waterfall - before I cracked my head on the ice.  A very slippery area.  No getting a closer look for me.  Ryan did take over driving for a while so I could put some snow on my head.

We wanted to make sure you knew that while Iceland is super pristine, they do still have power lines. -Ryan

I was really impressed with the colors for being middle of winter.  -Ryan

Akureyri Church at sunset

We drove until we were tired.  Total cloud cover for the evening.  Only having 6 hours of daylight, we have to pick and choose what we get to see and what we have to drive in the dark.  Ring Road (aka 1) is a bit busier in the north.  We stopped for the night in a parking lot along 1 outside Varmahlio.  It was a bit brighter and noisier than we'd like, but we were tired and didn't have a problem getting to sleep.
