Iceland Day 5 (Hvitserkur Ehf, Hellnar Arch, Aurora)

Hvitserkur Ehf

As happened most evenings/mornings on this trip, we would wake up early and decide that we were going to move toward our next destination.  We did just that this morning and headed to Hvitserkur Ehf, a cool looking sea formation off the coast.  I figured I could get a shot in the dark assuming that my low light lenses would assist.  I didn't plan on the formation to be tucked away and not visible until daylight.  The parking lot was closed for the winter which made it more challenging.  We then did the only thing we could - take a nap until daylight!

There's that raven again.

Horses enjoying sunrise.

Airing out his wings.

The handicap accessibility of toilets in various WC's had a pretty simple, slick design. They folded up flat on the wall and pulled down easily.

Fog hung low from time to time during the couple days up north.

Google cannot always be reliable. This is the road that Google attempted to send us to get to Hrausfoss waterfall.  After a few rough ruts and damage to the mud flap, we turned back.

Our little SUV did a great job with nearly everything we threw at it except for one road.  The dirt wedged the plastic up against the driveshaft and it sounded like the bottom end was going to fall out. Note to self, avoid plastic skid plates in -10C, they just don't hold up.  Oh, and double check google when you see no other tracks in the snow.  -Ryan

The peninsula heading out to the Hellnar arch was quite beautiful. Trees are something we'd seen very little of the entire trip so far.  Due to a fresh layer of snow, the pines and smaller bushes were quite a nice change in scenery.

There were again lots of small churches out on this peninsula.

This was at the Hellnar Arch trailhead.  Most signs were not in English and this is not the photos I've seen of the arch.  After walking around the ridge, I start to see signs for 3km to something (not Hellnar arch) so after 1km I decided to turn back as sunset was already starting.

WC means Water Closet in European countries.  It took me a while to figure that out.  You never know how long before you see one again!  We were talking to a gal at the car rental agency about Water Closets and she said she never knew what WC meant.  I didn't feel so bad! lol  In Iceland, you see a WC you use it.

The Aurora started early tonight (6pm) and put on quite a show.  We initially pulled into the end of someone's driveway.  About an hour later they showed up to get in and we had to move.  After things settled down for a bit we thought we'd head into town and get gas and go somewhere else.  We eventually ended back down the road from the house we started at.  Aurora had picked back up and got stronger.

The red on the ground is the brake lights from our vehicle because it was running heat for Ryan inside. How stupid is it that I have to either deal with brake lights or headlights if I want to be near the vehicle.  Technology in vehicles is not Aurora or night photography friendly.

Shannon really hated the car running because of the daytime running lights or rear taillights, but I was not 100% and was still dealing with not being able to keep warm/getting too hot.  So there was a constant fight between me starting the car and her asking me to turn it off.  It ran most of the time and you can see she worked around it fine most of the time -Ryan

Here's the money shot!  What the whole trip was all for.  Red/green dancing aurora over our heads!  Thank goodness I could be conscious to witness it.  -Ryan
